Should you use interfacing?

Using interfacing when sewing the plush coffin gives you a huge boost in structure and durability. With interfacing, coffin lies flat and it holds its shape, looking less like a plush.

If making an outdoor version, swap the felt for one of these:

Sewing Steps

  1. Print & cut your pattern pieces from the pattern pages. Print and cut 5 of the pattern pieces that says “cut 5”. Tape the coffin together using the letters as a guide. Tape along the dashed lines. Tape the coffin sides pattern pieces together using the 5 “cut 5” page and the 1 “cut 1” page.

  2. Cut the fabric. Cut two coffin fabrics, one for the back and one for the front. Cut two side pieces. These will be sewn together to make one long pieces for the sides, top and bottom of the coffin.

  3. Iron interfacing - This step is optional but will give the coffin some structure, especially if using felt or fleece or other soft fabric. Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong sides of all the fabric pieces.

  4. Sew the sides - with fabric right sides together, pin and stitch along both ends of the sides.

  5. With fabric right sides together, sew the sides to the front and back, leaving a gap along one side to reverse and stuffing.

  6. Turn - reverse right side out.

  7. Add a printable label: print your favorite iron-on label on dark-fabric transfer paper. Remove the backing and press with a PTFE sheet per package directions.

  8. Stuff & shape, then close the gap with a ladder stitch.

Outdoor note: If using canvas/oxford/ripstop, consider a light stabilizer for crisp edges. If using marine vinyl, clips > pins, a non-stick foot helps, and longer stitches look cleaner.

Make It Spook-tacular: Styling Ideas

  • Porch prop: Lean it by a pumpkin stack; tuck in fairy lights for a glow-from-below effect.

  • Candy station: Set it on a table, with treats and candy on top.

  • Photo booth: Add a speech bubble sign—“Casket case.”.

  • Glow up: Outline the lid with glow-in-the-dark fabric paint: Shop here.

Tips & Troubleshooting

  • Felt fuzz: Use a lint roller before pressing on the transfer.

  • Iron-on choice:

    • Dark-fabric transfers usually do not mirror; they’re opaque and sit on top.

    • Light-fabric transfers usually do mirror and rely on the fabric color.
Always follow your brand’s instructions for temp/time/peel.

  • Crisp corners: A touch of stabilizer at the points keeps that coffin silhouette sharp.

  • Weather sense: Even with outdoor fabric, bring it in during heavy rain to extend its afterlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize the pattern?
Yes—print at a scale (e.g., 80% or 120%). Adjust yardage and iron-on size accordingly.

Can I wash it?

  • Felt: Spot clean only; too much water can distort it.

  • Outdoor versions: Wipe clean. Avoid high heat on vinyl.
