Make a Memory Bear 🧸💝

Want to make your teddy even more special? Use a loved one's clothes to create a memory bear! It’s a wonderful way to honor someone you hold dear. Simply choose garments with sentimental value—such as an old shirt, dress, or even a baby blanket—and transform them into a keepsake that’s perfect for hugging.

Tips for Making a Memory Bear:

  • Choose soft, durable fabrics that will be easy to sew, like cotton or knit.

  • Stabilize thinner fabrics by ironing fusible interfacing to the back before cutting the pattern.

  • Mix and match fabrics for a patchwork-style memory bear! This adds a unique touch and makes each bear extra special.

Customization Ideas 🎨✨

Make your bear unique by adding:

  • Bow Ties or Ribbons: Sew a bow around the neck or even add a cute hat! 🎀

  • Embroidered Names or Dates: Personalize your bear with an embroidered name, date, or a short phrase on the tummy or paw.

  • Different Colored Eyes or Noses: Get creative with the details; try blue eyes, a bright pink nose, or even glittery thread for the mouth. 🌈

Step-by-Step Sewing Guide 🧵

  1. Pattern pieces: Download, print, cut and tape. Pattern pieces print on multiple pages and need to be taped together. Match up the letters and use them as a guide to taping the pieces together. (Figure 1)

  2. Trace the Pattern: Pin the pattern to wrong side of double layered fabric and trace around the bear using an removable marking pen. It’s on double layered fabric because you'll need two mirror-image pieces for the front and back of the bear.

  3. Create the face template: Place the paper pattern on top of the fabric and with the tip of a pair of scissors, poke a hole through the paper and make a mark onto the fabric at the location of each eye, nose and corners of the mouth. (Figure 2)

  4. Mouth: Using black embroidery floss or crochet thread, stitch the mouth. (Figure 3)

  5. Eyes: With the tip of a pair of scissors, cut a tiny hole at the location of each eye. Insert the plastic eye into each hole on the right side of the fabric and snap into place. (Figure 3)

  6. Nose: With the tip of a pair of scissors, cut a tiny hole at the location of the nose. Insert the plastic nose into the hole on the right side of the fabric and snap into place. Hot glue a pom pom to the face to make the nose. (Figure 3)

  7. Cut the Pattern: Cut around the bear leaving a 1/4” seam. (FIgure 4)

  8. Sew the Pieces Together: Place the two fabric pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving an opening along the bottom and small openings in each leg and arm for stuffing.

  9. Inward Seams: Clip the inward seams around the curves. (Figure 5)

  10. Turn Right Side Out: Reverse the fabric so the bear is right side out.

  11. Seam the Ears, Arms, and Legs: Sew straight across along the bottom of the ears, as well as the top of the arms and legs, to define these sections before stuffing. (Figure 6)

  12. Stuff the Bear: Carefully fill the bear with polyester stuffing, making sure to reach all the small areas.

  13. Close the Openings: Sew up the openings in the bottom, arms, and legs using a ladder stitch for a clean finish.
